In the zone! about me

When did you begin mountain biking and why?

I grew up in the small village of Wombourne in England and started messing around riding on the streets at around the age of 10.
One day, one of my neighbours handed me a copy of MBUK magazine - a quick read made me realise there was more to this sport than just messing around. My neighbour invited me out on a ride and showed me the local BMX track and some downhill trails and my enthusiasm spiralled from that point onwards!

How did you get into racing and how did you fund it?
My first ever race was 'Bob's Bash' at Henley-In-Arden - I was only 11 at the time. Over the following few years I entered a few regional cross country and dowhill events and achieved several podium places.
When I was 15 I managed to scrounge enough money to buy my first serious downhill bike - it was second hand, but had everything I had always longed for - hydraulic discs, 6" front and rear suspension etc!! I hoped this would be what I needed to compete in an entire downhill race season. My dreams were quite literally shattered though when I snapped the frame attempting a massive huck at one of the local spots!
As I couldn't afford to replace the frame I bought an old BMX from a friend for £20 and spent the next few years at local skateparks and dirtjumps.
When I finished school and got my first job I put all of my wages into my 'bike account', and soon purchased another second hand downhill bike which I used to race my first full UK season in the Junior category.

You now live in the French Alps - how did this come about?
I first visited Les Gets on a mountain bike holiday when I was 18. I immediately realised that the alps was definitely where I needed to be for this sport - the biggest mountains, the best races and the nicest cake shops!
The following two summers were spent in nearby Morzine - and when I was offered the opportunity to work out here I simply could not refuse! Several years later and I still love it here - I can't see myself ever going back to the UK.

What are your goals for this season?
This season I shall be concentrating on the Saab Salomon Avalanche Trophy Series as my main racing priority.
I will also be entering other race series where possible, including some of the World Cup rounds.

I am also training to become a professional mountain bike guide and instructor - so I can spend more time on my bike and less time on building sites!
